She was a wonderful guide who was lovely to spend the day with and really went out of her way to make the tour a memorable experience for me. I was interested in learning about the Aland parliament, and even though it was closed that day, she managed to have it opened for us so I could see the inside. I got a true insight into Aland and learned a lot on the tour as we explored some beautiful scenic places around the islands.The tour is absolute must do if you are visiting Aland! Seeing the sites and listening to the in depth historical and cultural information from our tour guide really gave us a good understanding of this unique self governing community and made us fall a little in love with \u00c5land.  We visited a castle, remnants of a Russian fort, an open air museum, an old prison, a cute tea garden, a lock, a church and enjoyed \u00c5landspannkaka and a fun beer tasting.  Not having our own car (came and went by ferry) made this the perfect way to visit \u00c5land! Troede jeg skulle v\u00e6re sammen med andre- men her sad jeg nu alene med Janne, med det vilde h\u00e5r, de levende \u00f8jne og med blik for naturen og det enkle. Luksus! \u201cHvor du vil hen- der k\u00f8rer vi\u201d, sagde hun. Og s\u00e5 foreslog hun, at vi skulle ende oppe nordp\u00e5 p\u00e5 \u00c5lands krone, som hun kalder det. Hvilket ogs\u00e5 skulle vise sig at blive en helt s\u00e6rlig og magisk oplevelse. Og s\u00e5 k\u00f8rte vi afsted i den lille bl\u00e5 bil. Jeg s\u00e5 et udkigst\u00e5rn p\u00e5 vejen- der ville jeg gerne op. Janne vendte bilen rundt og sigtede snuden mod bjerget. Uffe p\u00e5 Berget- hed stedet. Et udkigst\u00e5rn med den fineste cafe, som mest af alt minder om noget fra Tyrol. \u201cDu skal smage \u00c5landspandekager\u201d sagde Janne. \u00c5lsandspandekager med fl\u00f8deskum, sveskekompot, kaffe og udsigt. Og en snak om, hvorfor jeg egentlig er p\u00e5 denne rejse. S\u00e5 viste hun mig en gammel middelalderborg fra 1309-tallet. Kastelholm. Det var fint at se det historiske \u00c5land med dertilh\u00f8rende f\u00e6ngsel og frilandsmuseum. Egentlig er jeg mest til det levende liv og mindre til museer, men jeg er nu glad for, at jeg fik dette fine indblik\u2764\ufe0fVed siden af Kastelholm ligger en lille samling af kunsth\u00e5ndv\u00e6rkere og restaurant. Jeg k\u00f8bte et par smukke \u00e6ggeb\u00e6gre, en ring og lidt af den lokale \u00e6blemost. Uvidende som jeg var, kunne Janne fort\u00e6lle, at \u00c5land producerer omk 85% af hele Finlands \u00e6bleproduktion fordi klimaet her er helt unikt. Og som vi satte os ind i den lille bl\u00e5 bil og dragende nord p\u00e5, forstod jeg hvad hun mente. Her var ikke nyh\u00f8stede gule marker. En \u00e5landsk stolthed\ud83c\udf4eJeg skulle m\u00f8de Karl Erik Bergman, Jannes gode ven, - en mand i sin bedste alder og frisk som en hav\u00f8rn. Vi drejede ned af en grusvej, i den lille fiskerby, hvor han blev f\u00f8dt et par huse l\u00e6ngere henne. Nu boede han i det r\u00f8de fine tr\u00e6hus, hvor det meste af gr\u00e6sarealet var d\u00e6kket med br\u00e6nde, som han enten havde fundet eller f\u00e5et. \u201cJeg er selvforsynende- skyder to dyr om \u00e5ret her fra haven. Hiver fisk i land fra b\u00e5den, dyrker mine egne gr\u00f8ntsager og ryger mine fisk\u201dJanne k\u00f8rte os ned til b\u00e5dehuset, som Karl Erik havde m\u00e5tte bygge i 80\u2019erne, da sivene mere eller mindre havde spist sig ind p\u00e5 det gamle. Sivene var han ikke begejstrede for- det var han tilgeng\u00e6ld for den store silde-sorterings-maskine\ud83d\udc20\ud83d\udc4d\u201cJeg er fisker om sommeren, digter om vinteren. Jeg har m\u00f8dt mange originaler i mit liv\u201d, fortalte han med glimt i \u00f8jet mellem fiskenet og b\u00f8jer. Vi efterlod Karl Erik i hans fiskeparadis og k\u00f8rte op til kronen p\u00e5 \u00c5land, som Janne kalder det. Det er hendes sted. Der hun s\u00f8ger hen n\u00e5r stilheden skal findes. Ad kringlede grusveje hvirvlede den lille bl\u00e5 st\u00f8vet op og p\u00e5 en lille plet parkerede hun den forpustede bil. Hun smed skoene. Dette terr\u00e6n var hendes- og f\u00f8dderne havde det bedst p\u00e5 mos og klipper. Hun n\u00e6rmest fl\u00f8j over kogler og mos, som var det velour. Det blev mere og mere gr\u00e5t og bl\u00e6sende. T\u00e5get og t\u00e6t. Kogler, mos, krogede grene pegede i retning af de n\u00f8gne r\u00f8de klipper, som samledes i et helligt m\u00f8de forenden af \u00c5land. Med de to have i en temperamentsfuld omfavnelse. Her plejer hun at bade, men str\u00f8mmen var voldsom s\u00e5 vi fandt i stedet gl\u00e6de ved at lytte og m\u00e6rke pulsen derude p\u00e5 spidsen med havudsigt s\u00e5 langt \u00f8jet rakte. Vi vandrede tilbage og fandt en stejl grusvej ned til en lille bugt. Der var stille og havblik - vi lod t\u00f8jet glide ned om anklerne og omsluttede os det k\u00f8lige vand. Forfriskede satte vi os ind i den lille bl\u00e5 og k\u00f8rte tilbage mod Mariehamn. De seks timer var brugt- men alligevel svingede hun bilen ind til h\u00f8jre, til et sidste bes\u00f8g p\u00e5 bryggeriet Stallhagen, dem med honningen og \u00f8llet. Og der p\u00e5 terrassen sad \u00c5lands bedste accordeonspiller- en kvinde med venner, smil p\u00e5 l\u00e6ben og gl\u00e6de i fingrene, og spillede viser af Evert Taube. We went all over the island and I really felt like I got a good understanding of the culture on this unique islands from a real local. We went to lots of different attractions like the castle and a local farm for coffee and an Aland pancake. We ended the day at a pub and had a delicious meal. Janne is very passionate and knowledgeable about Aland and shared her enthusiasm in a warm, charming way. She moved to Aland from Estonia and wrote a book about her beautiful new home. We had a chance to see quite a bit of the island and had a personal visit with a 92 year old fisherman who is also a poet.Janne took us to some historic sites and various gorgeous spots with scenic views. We had a traditional yummy  pancake for lunch and also stopped at a brewery. We got a history and culture lesson on the island while we drove through beautiful scenery to our first stop.  We met a 92 year old herring fisherman, who who showed us his operations and shared some delicious smoke fish.  We then went to visit a cutting edge apple orchard, and sampled some cider and nibbles.  Finally we visited the local castle and village.  While writing this I'm thinking a reader is probably yawning.  Don't!  We really had a great time and we want to return.
